Dear Editor,

I am writing with deep concern regarding the selection of the 100 most influential people.

Currently Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat state in India is poised at the top. While I appreciate that the criterion is 'most influential', even his inclusion in this list is problematic. There are many very influential people. Giving Narendra Modi this exposure and hence recognition increases his profile and gives him exposure he craves. He has been very directly linked and named with regard to the Gujarat genocide of 2002. There is ample documentation of this, including by Indian and international organizations. The genocide was pre-planned and executed very meticulously. Individuals who have named him in this connection, including those in his government, have been mysteriously killed or in the case of senior police officials have been demoted, transferred or arrested.

The build-up to the genocide included the re-writing of textbooks, including history books which state that Hitler did not go far enough with the Jews; that the same mistake would not be made with Muslims. Priviligeing Mr. Modi is a propaganda victory for him. He has ridden out all the criticisms and charges against him with strong support because of his economic showing and his outright and flagrant denials, and his strategy of turning Gujarat's majority Hindu population into victims with his rhetoric and framing of issues. He will claim this as one more indication that he is 'innocent' --otherwise why would he get this recognition, and those who have been massacred and the survivors who are still struggling to get justice -- women who were gang-raped, who survived the murders of their families, including children, men and boys as well, will yet once more believe that the world does not care for justice. Please remove Narendra Modi from your list. While he may be influential -- do we wish to promote him any more? There are at least 100 more people who are worthy of this honour. Mr. Modi should be on another list -- that of mass murderers and genociders.
